Spring Break 1992 in South Padre Island
After loading luggage into Randy's car in front of 407 Cambridge, during that last-minute push to finally depart, the driver's side door fell off the car. After a few minutes of angry words from Randy, someone, somehow secured the door in place. We were required to enter/exit the car through the passenger side door for the remainder of the trip.
Twelve of us, in Pi Kapp style, shared one hotel room. I spent the week of cold, windy, and sometimes rainy nights sleeping on the balcony, which was only about two feet wide. Because the weather was cold and rainy most of the week, we spent a good deal of time in Matamoros (south of the boarder). Two long-neck beers for $1.00, including the lime. Girls dancing on the tables. Upside down tequilla shots on the spinning barber chairs. Lots of mariachi bands playing Labamba. While in Matamoros, Jay, Jason, and I went to a grocery store to get some food. Jay decided to use the cereal isle as the restroom. Later that evening, while approaching the boarder checkpoint, Jay noticed that security was searching people while crossing the boarder. Jay pulled something from his pocket and handed it to me saying, "here, take this." I discovered he had given me the sling-blade knife he had purchased earlier, which everyone believed was illegal in America. Juli not only had his back and chest shaved, he also lost an eyebrow. The stereo on the beach was powered by a small generator, which was rented in Grand Forks, but never returned.
